"Kamala! Kamala! Kamala! Kamala!" Molly repeated the name breathlessly, her face flushed with excitement, as her voice bounced off the walls around her and echoed the name back. It wasn't lost, even over the dragging sound, as the little mutant could be obnoxiously loud when she wanted to. Behind her Molly was pulling along a cardboard box that was even bigger than she was. The monstrous thing wasn't in the best shape, and the rigid paper sagged in places, but it was better than the boxes she normally found down here. And bigger!
They'd been playing hide and go seek. Kamala was much better at the game than Molly was, but the little girl could still find enjoyment in seeking out her expertly hidden friend. Usually. It wasn't as much fun as the game had been when she'd been with her friends in that run down mansion. Down here there wasn't much to hide behind. What was there was either obvious or icky. Molly was starting to get used to the coating of grime that seemed to cover everything in New York City, but there were still some things that grossed her out.
After counting out loud to ten, which was practically forever, Molly'd been hunting for the older girl when she'd stumbled across the cardboard box. Kamala hadn't been inside it, which was Molly's first thought, but once she'd turned it over and climbed inside it the box had ignited the child's wild imagination. Distracted entirely by the treasure Molly had forgotten entirely about their game and had claimed her new prize. A cardboard box could be anything! Even a fort!
Footsteps sounded ahead. The child went careening around the corner full tilt. "Look!" Molly announced bouncing forward with the box trailing behind her, "Look what I found!" Except, it wasn't Kamala. Molly froze at the sight of a stranger, her bright eyes widening in surprise, before a smile popped across her face. "Hi! I'm Molly!" Raven's breath hitched in surprise as she turned the corner. There was a girl standing in the tunnel opposite to her. Going rigid mid-step, her scales flickered as she slipped from her natural form to that of the human woman she preferred to mimic. She took a sharp step back, regarding what stood it front of her: a girl, a young girl, was in the tunnels, alone, crawling around in a box, and had possibly just seen her shift from one form to another. God, she hoped it'd been too dark for her to see, that she'd moved fast enough. From what she'd observed before her escape down into the tunnels, it didn't seem like the human population of -- here, wherever she was -- was any more accepting of mutants than they were in Westchester. Not that she could have done much more for to prevent the situation, as it'd been impossible to hear the girl approaching from upstream the sewer-water river she'd been following. For far from the first time in her life, Raven wished her shapeshifting abilities had come along with enhanced senses. She should have run. This girl was only a child though, and she was alone, at least as far as Raven could tell. Blinking into the darkness, she found that the erratic twisting of the tunnel obscured anything beyond a few hundred feet from view. Someone could easily be lurking back there, but if this child had a guardian, she wouldn't be down in sewers, would she? No watchful parent would let their child play with boxes that, from the film of slime that covered them, were clearly found in sewer tunnels. Unless they'd had no choice, Raven realized. She'd be stupid to assume she was the only mutant taking cover in the sewers. Against Raven's better judgement, she felt a pang of sympathy for the girl, something low in her stomach that reminded her of her own time on the streets. When the girl looked up at her, wide-eyed and smiling, the feeling only grew stronger. "Molly," she repeated back to her. "Are you alone down here, Molly?"

Kamala heard the booming voice of giant Molly. Holding tight to her pipe, the teen looked down below her. Everything looks far and yet big. The shapeshifter had already hidden in a couple of boxes in the previous round. Now she was perched up high hugging a sewer pipe jutting from the ceiling. Being the size of a hand was oddly comfortable. Small enough to be hard to notice, yet big enough to not feel threatened by random cockroaches. There was a lot of them skittering through the sewers.
Molly was taking some time to find her. Kamala gave a little giggle in an attempt to help her out. A moment later and the little girl started talking loudly again. For a moment the teen thought her friend had found her. Rotating around her pipe to get a better view, Kamala eyes widened at the sight of a stranger. The heroine immediately let go of her hiding spot. As she dropped to to the floor, her body expanded as rapidly as her powers allowed. A nine foot giant suddenly wrapped elongated arms protectively around the little girl. Suspicious eyes zoomed in on the woman in front of them. "No, she is not. Who are you?" Kamala realized she sounded defensive. But it was a dangerous world and there weren't many reasons for people to go underground. Most of them didn't look like the white woman in front of her. And Molly didn't know her.
Eyes shifting around, Kamala searched for the presence of other humans. She had heard of trackers. Molly and her would probably be prized targets. Young enough to be trained, yet strong and powerful compared to some of the local mutants. But I won't allow that.

The flicker of blue wasn't normal, and was vaguely familiar, but Molly was too distracted to voice that at the moment. The stranger was asking her if she was alone, and the girl opened her mouth to answer, but the sound of someone dropping to the ground behind her had the little girl glancing up. Kamala, who was almost as tall as the ceiling!, appeared behind her. Molly grinned up at the older girl, as if to say I found you!, before her gaze dropped back to the stranger. The fins of her dirty fish hat flopped with the movement.Molly didn't really understand how dangerous this world was, even with all the scary stories she'd heard, but the tone in Kamala's voice put the little mutant on edge. Had she missed something scary? The nice lady hadn't done anything threatening yet. Everybody asked Molly if she was alone. It was something she attributed to adults, and most adults weren't sinister...she was pretty sure."She's not mean!" Molly said, glancing up at Kamala reproachfully, one tiny hand reaching out for the elongated arms in front of her. Then she glanced back at Raven for confirmation, her bright eyes sparkling with innocent hope, "Right?" Then she glanced up at Kamala again. "She's like us!" TAG:Raven Darkhölme & Kamala Khan

Mutants, then, Raven thought, watching as the second girl -- older, this one, almost a young woman -- wrapped herself protectively around the child. She'd guessed correctly, but regardless of these girls' species, being within reach if the situation turned sour (assuming it hadn't already) wasn't a risk she wanted to take. This girl's appearance out of nowhere suggested abilities far beyond simply existing at an abnormal size. Her eyes narrowed at the tone of the girl's voice. She hadn't done anything to suggest aggression, and yet one so young already took her presence as a threat. A shame, both that the girl had to think that way -- Raven chose ignored the fact that she'd come to the same outlook on the world at a far younger age -- and that she might now have to react aggressively. If a giant attacked her, regardless of age, Raven was going to fight back. She withdrew, trying to distance herself. Despite her best efforts, the confines of the sewers didn't allow for much movement, and only a few steps in reverse had her back to the wall. The cold touch of the cement on her skin sent a tingle of nerves down her spine. Running from this distance would be foolish, not from someone so much larger than her, and a mass change so large in scale as to match the girl would take more energy than she had. Not after wandering around in a sewer with nothing to eat, anyway. Raven squared her shoulders instead, and prepared for the worst. When the younger girl interjected, though, Raven could have laughed. In her panic, she'd forgotten she'd changed forms at all. The giant girl assumed she was human. Logical, as she'd taken the form of one, but wildly incorrect. "Mystique." She nodded to the older girl. "You're mutants as well, I assume?" Letting her scales flicker back into place once again, Raven turned towards the child. "And I'm not mean, no." Giving a thin, half attempt at a smile, she added, "At least not to our kind. But it's dangerous to assume all of us aren't."

After scanning her surrounding, Kamala looked down at Molly. The large grin was contagious, lighting up her mood. The black-haired girl returned a smile. After the brief pause, Kamala looked straight at the woman. Without changing her size, the shapeshifter began to increase her density. Her movement slowed somewhat, but gained in gravitas. But before the woman introduced herself, Molly interjected. Kamala softened somewhat. The girl seemed to know something she didn't. Neck stretching down to tickle the little girl's ear, Kamala whispered, "Put on your superhero cape. Just in case." Kamala's own head turned blonde. Her dirty street clothes melded into the original Ms Marvel costume. The giant Carol Denver was now ready to face the unknown woman.
Her response took Kamala by surprise. The young hero froze, too stunned to speak, as the woman shifted from one appearance to another. The superhero nerd only knew of one mutant capable of this. And she isn't nice. Eyes narrowing, she asked, "What is the leader of the brotherhood of evil mutants doing here?" Kamala didn't think she would attack the two of them. This was a world hostile to mutants. While she was a villain, Kamala had heard that Mystique was protective of mutants. "I assume you are, like us, stuck in this strange world?" Ms Marvel lowered her fists, relaxing them into outstretched hands. They were still oversized, but not quite as threatening.
Looking back down, Kamala whispered to Molly "If I tell you to, run. Towards the bridge. I'll meet you there." Why hadn't they discussed an escape plan earlier? The teen just thought of these important things in the middle of emergencies. Worst timings. "But maybe you're right."

Kamala's whisper that Molly should grab her superhero cape was met with a whispered, "Okay!" and a smile of delight. She pulled her little backpack off, reaching to zip it open, when the older woman flickered back to blue. Stunned, her eyes widening with recognition, Molly's bag flopped to the ground with a thud. This was a woman she'd seen only on the news and the internet. Not in a good light, either. The name cinched it: Mystique The little girl gasped as her facial expression matched the fish hat on her head."You're a bad mutant!" Molly protested quietly, a flicker of hurt crossing her face as she realized she'd been lied to. "Like Magneto!" She backed up into Kamala looking caught between looking awed, and looking like she wanted to cry. The older of the pair was less accusatory, but the questions were just as pointed until it came to the simple truth: they were all stuck here together. Molly took Kamala's lowering fists as a sign that everything would be okay, until the older girl whispered in her ear again. The little girl nodded mutely in agreement with Kamala's escape plans, but she didn't really want to run away and leave her friend to fight a scary bad mutant. "I'm a good mutant!" she informed Mystique as she reached for her backpack. "Kamala and I are superheroes!" she pulled out her cape like the older girl had initially suggested, a ratty pink sheet with a pair of Ps drawn on it, and held it up for the blue woman to see. "I have a cape like Storm. When I grow up I'm gunna join the X-Men and-" She cut off abruptly, her eyes widening at the realization, "You've met the X-Men!" she ducked under Kamala's arm and bounced excitedly closer to Raven despite calling her bad not a few moments earlier. The little girl hugged her cape to her chest and stared up at Mystique looking star struck. "Can you tell me about them? Please? Please! Are they as cool in person as they are on tv?" The older of the two girls was indeed more powerful than she'd initially seemed, just as Raven has suspected. A shapeshifter, similar in nature to her own mutation. Watching the girl transform -- if she was a girl at all -- was surreal, not only in how it mirrored her own power, but in that Raven had never realized how inhuman an ability it actually was. Fitting, really. The girls' alarmed expressions confused her, though. If they were all mutants, there was nothing to be surprised by. When the shifter spoke, though, she understood, and the half-smile slipped from her face. "The Brotherhood," Raven said, pulling herself up to her full height, "disbanded years ago. Magneto was taken into custody." At least he had been, however much the half-healed bullet wound in her leg said otherwise. Regardless, young mutants with outdated information wasn't surprising. It wasn't like they'd gone around declaring their organization to the general public. As for whether she was stuck here or not -- well, Raven wasn't in the mood to reveal that she had very little knowledge of what, exactly, was happening, or how she'd arrived in this city, so she simply answered with, "The sewers? They seemed preferable to being surrounded by humans. You?" It wasn't lost on her that these girls had likely been chased down into the tunnels, being younger and likely unskilled in concealing their powers. Whether they apparently considered the Brotherhood evil or not, they were all mutants in a similar situation. So when the little girl, Molly, pulled out a ratty semblance of a cape and started rambling about the X-Men, Raven only blinked and reminded herself that these girls likely had no idea what they were implying. If Charles' team had somehow reached legendary status among the youngest of the species, she didn't want to entirely crush their dreams. "The X-Men," she started, then paused, "went out with the Brotherhood. They haven't existed for -- God, almost a decade." Raven decided mentioning that the last time she'd met any of them, they'd seemingly recruited Magneto and tried to kill her could wait for a later date. Children needed realism, not their hope destroyed. Tag: Molly Hayes Kamala Khan Notes: "Brotherhood of Evil Mutants" should win the award for best public relations. Ever.

Kamala smiled as Molly took her role as Princess Powerful very seriously. She's going to become the next captain America. Or whatever the equivalent was in this world. Maybe it's that Batman dude. As the little mutant mentioned Magneto, Mystique retorted that the Brotherhood was gone. "How?" Kamala blurted out. "Did they fight against Medusa's inhumans?" The teen was only vaguely familiar with the tense relationship between mutants and inhumans. She didn't get why they fought but knew that Queen Medusa was a formidable strategist and superhero.
"Not the sewers!" Kamala didn't know if Mystique was avoiding the topic on purpose, or if there was some other reason. She decided to ignore the anti-human whiff in the air. "The humans here aren't like the humans where we come from." They didn't talk about mutants or inhumans, but of abnormals. And Kamala had always thought "mutie" sounded offensive. "They've never had a professor X, a Magneto or even a Hulk in this world!" Kamala had spent some time in the library to piece this together. All the media was tightly controlled, but these were things you'd expect at least some news coverage on. "I'm not even sure Asgardians ever came. No mention of Thor or Loki." Kamala was waiting for a reaction from the more experienced super. She was a bad mutant, but maybe the ex-leader of the brotherhood had information she was willing to share.
What happened next was almost heartbreaking. Kamala first smiled like a proud lionness as Molly verbally pounced on Mystique with all of her X-men fangirl power. The superhero thought she saw a dark expression profile on the other mutant's face. Then she dropped the bomb. Immediately, Kamala turned around to face Molly, making sure she was ok. "No!" That couldn't be true. That didn't make sense. It wasn't fair. "I don't believe you." Fists started growing again like angry hippos. Kamala turned around to Mystique. "I think you are lying." Even if she wasn't, Molly didn't need to hear that. "I think the X-men are stuck here as well. And we'll find and save them and the rest of us." Kamala looked down at Molly again, striking her most encouraging smile.

The smile on Molly's face dropped instantly. "The X-Men are...gone?" she asked in a tiny voice as her vision blurred. A decade seemed like forever! Especially to a child who was barely past her own first decade. She couldn't believe she'd been wrong, though, and that she'd been fooled into watching reruns and thinking that they were real-life right-now. But Mystique, someone who had fought the X-Men would know. She turned her devastated gaze to Kamala who didn't want to believe it either. Her first reaction wasn't to cry, like Molly's was, and her older friend's strength was encouraging. The little girl gave Kamala a weak smile, but she didn't look entirely sure about being able to save the X-Men. The X-Men were supposed to save them and they couldn't do that if they were gone! She hugged her cape and rubbed a dirty hand under her runny nose.Maybe Kamala was right and Mystique was wrong. Or maybe they were trapped here too and needed some heroes to save the heroes. "We're gunna save them!" Molly declared. "We can find them and help them be the X-Men again. Sometimes even superheroes need saving." TAG:Raven Darkhölme & Kamala Khan

"Inhumans?" She pursed her lips, attempting to recall if she'd heard the name before, but drew a blank. Still, there had been so many late night meetings, so many secret plans, there was always a possibility she'd forgotten. "They were captured, by the CIA. By Trask." Raven's voice was sharp, final. When Kamala spoke again, Raven folded her arms over her chest, regarding the two girls. It seemed unlikely that they would be intentionally trying to mislead her, despite how inconsistent or bizarre their information was. Shape-shiftier or not, Kamala appeared to be earnest, and Molly was so young that suspecting them of malicious objectives was just unnecessary. She didn't need to trust them, but abandoning young mutants in the sewers of an environment that even they were unfamiliar with, simply because they could, possibly, pose a threat was cruel. "You say the humans here have never heard of those things, but neither have I." The least she could do was try and sort out what had happened. "And the humans from where you're from have. Where is that?" She tilted her head towards Molly, her expression softening somewhat. "The X-Men were disbanded peacefully." At least as far as she knew, anyway. She hadn't exactly been on speaking terms with them then, nor was she now. "They are not stuck here." When the younger girl proclaimed that they were going to save them, Raven had to physically resist wincing. "That's not -- you don't want to do that. They're not here, and even if they were, it's not safe." Magneto is with them, she wanted to say, I don't trust him, and neither should you. She had to tell them, before they went charging off into the underground to go after their make-believe X-Men. But if they were children, mutant children, they needed all the hope they could get. And it was her Magneto wanted dead, not innocent mutant children. He wouldn't harm them. Would he? Well, she knew Charles would never let children be hurt. At least not badly. At least not unwillingly. She recalled the time they'd pushed Sean off the satellite dish. "Magneto is with them," she said, and held her breath.

Kamala frowned as the brotherhood mutant explained her view of the world. It was all so confusing! "I don't know who Trask is." Being captured by the CIA didn't sound nice. They didn't have a good reputation handling mutants. But Kamala thought that was ancient history. "And what do you mean, you've never heard of the Hulk?" The green superhero was kind of a big deal. He was also hard to miss. "I'm from Jersey, but that's not the point." arms started swinging wildly. Did Mystique not realize? What was going on with her not knowing the Hulk? "I mean this isn't our world. Their history is sorta similar to ours. They've had Napoleon and Hitler and all that. But some things are different. No mutants. They call them abnormals here."
The other shapeshifter insisted the X-men were over. Kamala narrowed her eyes in suspicion all the while lowering her right arm to give Molly a hug. "There is at least the three of us from our world. I refuse to believe we're the only ones." But what does she mean, it's not safe? Of course this world wasn't safe. It made even her old earth look like a island of tolerance by comparison. Or did she mean the X-men were a source of danger. That just didn't compute... until the revelation. "What?" Ms Marvel responded before closing her eyes. She needed to think. Her grip on Molly's shoulder tightened unconsciously.
Kamala remained silent for the next couple of seconds. Her brain kept registering any exchange between Mystique and Princess Powerful. Information got coursed through her, detaching and reassembling into theories and possibilities. How she would have dreamed of such an adventure three months ago, writing fanfics in her room. Plunged inside of one of her stories, it felt a bit more bizarre. Slowly though, the fan-fire rose again in Kamala's heart. Maybe it was the presence of the legendary mystique. Maybe it was Molly's contagious energy. This is what I dreamed of. Repeating herself, she simply stated, "We're going to find the X-men and every single mutant stuck here. We're going to save them, Princess P. and I." Ms Marvel then looked at the other shapeshifter, as if daring her to contradict them again. Or maybe it was an invitation to join the strange team. After all, she was a mutant too.

Molly didn't know who Trask was, but he sounded like a poophead. The CIA were supposed to be the good guys, like the police, but apparently they weren't. Then Mystique said she'd never heard of the Hulk. Molly's jaw dropped, her eyes widening in surprise, as she stared at the blue mutant in shock. "You don't know..." she echoed as her brain tried to compute this information. "He's the big green one! Y'know:
"HULK SMASH!"She hadn't meant to, exactly, but her powers activated when she mimicked one of her favorite heroes. The girl's bright eyes glowed fuchsia and as she crashed her fists on the walk in front of her in an exaggerated mimicry of the famous green superhero. The concrete where she hit shattered with a crack, flying up some chunks that splashed into the water and scraped across the piping nearby. Molly hopped back to her feet, deactivated her abilities, and looked like she was about to get into trouble. "Oops." the child said apologetically. The girl hung back for a few moments, letting Kamala explain what she'd already learned about this strange world, while Mystique tried to convince them that chasing after the X-Men wasn't a good idea. Molly's lower lip pushed out in a pout, and she leaned against Kamala as the older girl pulled her into something of a hug. She didn't want to listen to any lies that the X-Men were the bad guys. They weren't. And they would never hurt her or Kamala! And then Mystique told them who they'd apparently let join."Ow!" Molly whined when Kamala's grip on her shoulder tightened. The little girl wriggled away, her brow furrowing. "Why would they let Magneto join the club?" Molly asked Mystique in a manner that questioned their reasoning more than her information. She knew them far better than Molly did. She'd actually met them! "He's a meanie-face!"When Kamala roused from her odd silence Molly startled, jumping slightly, before glancing up to look at her older friend. It was a glorious proclamation, and Molly's face lit up in agreement. "Yeah!" she shouted doing an excited hop. Then she realized something. "Hey, Kamala, can we fit everybody down here?"TAG:Raven Darkhölme & Kamala Khan

Raven was having a difficult time finding some justification for anyone, let alone mutants, being unfamiliar with the name. "Trask Industries," she supplied, waiting for some sign of recognition. "He runs experiments on mutants." Trask Industries was far more of a household name than whoever this Hulk was -- some kind of local mutant hero, she supposed. "Never heard of him." She was about to insist that she'd been to Jersey and there was no one there by the name either, but Kamala's statement that this was somehow another world entirely halted any further attempts to defend her knowledge of the mutant world. Raven could only hope that her eyes didn't betray her complete surprise at the idea. She'd been beginning to doubt her initial judgement that these girls had been misinformed, but not in a way of this magnitude. "Abnormals," she repeated, setting her jaw in an attempt to cover her confusion. It wasn't impossible. She'd seen mutants so powerful they'd seemed near-divine, and while most of their powers had been destructive, who was to say there weren't similar mutants with the power to create a a parallel Earth? Still, Raven couldn't help but feel slightly alarmed at the revelation. A different world, and one without mutants, apparently. "The humans are still angry, though, and dangerous." The pavement smashed, Molly's sudden demonstration of the Hulk's power snapping Raven back to reality. Dodging away from the flying derbies, her scales flickered in an aimless attempt at forming something harder to protect her. Fortunately, the only thing that managed to hit her was a small splattering of sewer water, that, while disconcertingly brown, slid across her scales harmlessly. Well, the girl had power, at least. "Watch that," she snapped towards Molly, then, remembering how young the girl was, added, "You never know who's watching." For however young the girls were, they took the news about Magneto's presence surprisingly well. "As far as I know, he's doing more than just providing them with his power. They're allied." On how friendly of terms, Raven had no idea. "Last I heard of him, he was locked up underneath the Pentagon. I'd assume they got him out, and he's paying his debts now." Still, that didn't sound quite right to her -- though she hadn't known Mangeto in over a decade, she had known Erik, and he hadn't been one to stick around unwillingly if he didn't want to. But for now, best guesses were all she had to go on. When Kamala propositioned the rescue of any other mutants in this world, Magneto be damned, Raven paused, inspecting the two girls. She had to give them credit for their ambition, and they did seem to be powerful, but they were young and inexperienced and just -- they weren't hard. Anyone who tried to play hide-and-seek in the sewers was still so naive, despite their status as mutants. "If you want to do that, you're going to need a plan. Wandering around the sewers isn't going to find you more mutants, and even if you get lucky, it's not going to help them." So far, these were the only other mutants Raven had met in this city. She didn't want to abandon them yet, and she wasn't about to let them run off with no idea of what they were getting into. "Is there some kind of meeting place for these 'abnormals?' Anything you've heard of?"

Kamala closed her eyes as debris flew in the air. Molly had activated her powers. But Mystique did not know the Hulk. The hero didn't comment on that. The older mutant snapped at Molly. Kamala protectively wrapped her giant arms again. "I think everyone can guess we are mutants at this point. Molly, just be your amazing self." Mystique got a hard stare for a moment.
She nodded however when the other shapeshifter talked of the humans of this world. "Yes. We've mostly been hiding down here, like the local abnormals." While uncomfortable, the sewers gave the misfits of society a surprising range of freedom. Nobody seemed to care much about them, and if you knew the right reptile you could learn your way around pretty quickly. "They are nice. Not very brave, but friendly and welcoming." The abnormals didn't like to group up. There were some small gatherings to exchange information. But there was no organized decision-making in the tunnels. "Wanna climb on my back?" That was for Molly. Given Ms Marvel's current size and weight, the little girl would be feather-light. And Kamala still felt uneasy around the Brotherhood mutant.
Both Mystique and Molly made fair criticisms to Kamala's optimistic sketch of a plan. She smiled at the very different ways the two presented the problems. "We probably can fit them down here. Or we can move to New Jersey." Mystique was more aggressive. She also raises a good point however. Kamala was fine sharing more information with the other mutant. She was still hoping to understand how Mystique hadn't heard about the Hulk. "They avoid large aggregations. Keep quiet and carry on is the motto here." With the occasional trip up to scavenge food and other necessities. Kamala winced as she remembered their crunched up tube of toothpaste. The two girls would milk out of it maybe another day's worth of paste. Focusing her attention on Mystique again, Kamala continued, "They do share a lot of information however. Word of mouth and favors are very important currencies down here."
"What's your plan now that you're here?" Kamala asked aggressively. "Setting up a new Brotherhood?" Mystique relationship to her mentor Magneto was still unclear. "Finding out how we got here?" Finding out who the Hulk is?
