Her plastic bag made a crinkling noise as Molly's tiny fist tightened around it. The girl paused, poking her head around the corner, and glanced left and right before she bounced into the tunnel proper. The youngest Runaway had a vague idea of where she was going. She'd been running around here long enough to know the tunnels they ran through like giant hamsters sort of well.
The cheese in the plastic bag she was carrying wasn't fit for human consumption. It was a good thing, then, that the creatures she was planning to give it to weren't human at all. Molly had been feeling guilty ever since she and Kamala had run into the giant rats that had tried to steal their food. It was harder for the creatures to go up to the streets and dig through the garbage for food like Molly could. So she decided to do it for them.
She hadn't explained to Kamala, exactly what she thought she was doing as she dug through the garbage in search of food. The best stuff they could eat, although actually eating garbage still made the little girl's nose wrinkle in disgust. They hadn't had to resort to that yet, thankfully, but the rats would have no problem. She'd even seen one of their tiny cousins while rooting around behind a deli! It had hissed at her.
"Hello?" Molly asked as she stepped forward cautiously. She was pretty sure she'd heard something moving ahead. A person might answer. A rat probably wouldn't.

Hisss. A rat emerged from the tunnel. Hiiiissss. Giant teeths clicked in the air. The mutant rodent stood there for a while, continuing its hissing. The human girl seemed unimpressed. Lowering its head, the rat pointed its nose at the strange human. No yelling, no threatening weapons. It didn't even smell awfully artificial. Squeak? Cleaning it's whiskers, the rat suddenly registered more smells. Squeak! Food. Food was always good. But food meant fighting. Siblings shared, but humans fought. Sometimes they even fought when there was no food.
Edging closer, the rat stared at the artificial bag the human child was carrying. The food smell came from there. There was a quick screeching noise. But the rat stopped very quickly. The strange human had large ears. Loud sounds would hurt large ears if they weren't rat ears. Rat ears were special. The rat had never seen a human with such large, round ears. Maybe she was like itself, an abnormal. Maybe she would share, like siblings did.
Hopeful, the rat edged closer to the plastic bag. It was going to try and eat some of the cheese it smelled inside. The rat wasn't going to eat everything. Siblings always left something for the rat who shared. It was how the herd kept together. And then it was your turn to look for food the other would accept.
The rat turned its head a few moments later. Voices echoed. A wave of hot air streamed out of the tunnel. Hiiiissss. It couldn't screech with fragile-ears next to it.

It was a rat. Molly made a startled squeak of surprise and hesitated as it hissed at her. Maybe this hadn't been a good idea. The rat was bigger than she was! And those teeth were scary. That seemed to be all the thing was doing, though: hissing. The little girl stayed still, trying not to tremble, and waited to see if the rat would attack or not.
A loud screech had her clamping her hand over her ears with a rustle of a plastic bag. The screech didn't last long, and Molly slowly lowered her hands from her ears as the rat moved closer. "You want food?" the little girl in the koala hat asked softly in a tone of voice reserved for cute animals and small children. She knew that tone very well. Everybody seemed to like to use it with her even if she wasn't a baby anymore.
Molly offered the rat the bag watching with delight as the animal took the offered food. A giant smile lit across Molly's face as her hands formed fists under her chin. The big rats were not as cute as the one at school, but it was still kind of cute! She would have been content to watch the rat without interruption. Fate, it seemed, had a different plan.
Voices, and a waft of hot air, floated past Molly and blew her hair into her face. "What's that?" she asked the rat as she peered down the tunnel.

Mike was first to emerge from the tunnel. The man took heavy steps. His right hand carried a blaster the size of a suitcase. It looked almost comically large, but the armor made it feel surprisingly light. With his free hand the fade agent took off his helmet, clipping it to his over-sized belt. "That was tiring." He looked back. Two more armored men appeared. One of them, Tyler, had already taken off his headgear. He also carried a blaster. His left hand carried a long rope-shape around his shoulder. The last man spoke next, voice distorted by the helmet he was wearing. "I wish you'd let me incinerate those tails." He sported the largest weapon of the three, a cylindrical flame-thrower that required both hands to carry. "It's probably not sanitary. Who knows what kind of Abnormal germs those monsters carried." Tyler laughed his boss off, readjusting the "rat-rope" around his shoulder. "Oh come on. It's just a souvenir. You know, something to remember our little adventure tonight." He gave the leader a friendly jab, followed by a conspiratory wink. Mike shook his head. He could guess what the real plan was for the giant rat tails. They probably fetch a high price.
The giant rat jumped in front of Molly. A deep, guttural noise emerged from its throat. All three Fade agents turned around, surprise on their face. "Ah... shit, we missed one." That was Mike. Tyler just smiled, caressing his already large collection of rat-tails. Finally, the commander stepped forward, blocking any direct blastershot. "Careful guys. There is a girl behind. Don't shoot carelessly." The rat kept making its noise. It was trying to gain fragile-ears some time. He knew they wouldn't last long against the heavy-men. The two had to run away. Could fragile-ears climb pipes? Those were the safest escape from the heavy-men.
"Kid, step aside." That was Mike, eager to get this whole thing over with. "And don't worry. We'll take care of the big ugly rat." With a loud clank, he loaded his blaster. Tyler followed suit, a gleam in his eyes.

The voices echoing down the tunnel morphed into three scary figures in big scary robot suits. They reminded her of scary Iron Men and Molly froze as her bright eyes widened in fear. Her new friend reacted right away, though. The little girl didn't move as the rat positioned itself between herself and the men with the weapons as if to protect her. Then one of the men ordered Molly to step aside.
She went the wrong direction, finally kicking into gear, as she scrambled around her new rat friend to approach the men with the terrifying weapons. They clanked as they were activated, but Molly didn't have time to be nervous.
"Wait, no!" the child cried as she skidded to a stop near the men. Now she was the one doing the protecting as she stood between the monster and the weapons. "Please don't hurt it! It's a nice rat!" she pleaded clasping her hands in front of her chest and putting on her best puppydog face. Molly was no stranger to begging older people to do what she wanted.

Mike lowered his gun immediately as the girl ran in front of the rat. "Kid. It's an abnormal. It may be contagious." He looked back to the cap for help. But the boss seemed focused on making sure Tyler didn't do anything stupid. "Just come over here and we'll bring you back to your mommy and daddy." An armored hand reached out, trying to wrap around the little girl and pull her away from the rat. But the mutant rodent, sensing a threat, bounded to the side and began screeching.
Both Tyler and Mike had to clap their hands against their ears. Only the boss, still wearing his helmet, was protected. He dashed forward, hitting the mutant with his large cylinder. It got pushed away from the girl, rolling in the dirt and landing in a corner. "There. Subject separated from the child. Begin extermination." He looked back at his men. Their guns were much more efficient than his flamethrower when it came to chasing down one of those fast vermins.
Mike still looked at the puppy-faced girl, making sure she was ok. Tyler had already docked his blaster again. He fired a first volley of shots into the corner where the rat had been catapulted. The light from the energy-weapon lighted up the dark alley, revealing a tail scrambling away. "Slippery monsters. It's getting away!" Tyler snarled the last words.
