Appearance
Vulpes is an anthropomorphic fox, 6'1" tall on digitigrade legs. He is lean and narrow-bodied, though obviously muscled from years of hard living and fighting. Mainly his fur is dark red, contrasting with the brilliant white of his jaw, throat, chest and belly. Past his elbows the dark red melds into black fur that covers his hands, which are human-like apart from the fur, semi-retractable claws (very sharp as a rule), and pads on his palms and the tips of his fingers. His feet have similar stockings ending a little below the knee; his feet only have four toes and somewhat blunter claws. His tail darkens towards the end, before terminating in a small white tip.
His face is a fox's mask and muzzle. A black border runs from his nose, between the red and white, terminating midway up in large inverse triangles. His irises are golden with black borders and he has slit pupils. He has human hair, as well, which is black; it is straight and rather messy, with long bangs framing his face; it falls to his upper back. His triangular ears are black.

ABILITIES
Weapons • Claws, teeth and psychology
Skill Set • Survivalist
Vulpes can live off of almost anything, in just about any setting in the northeastern U.S., from wilderness to urban jungle.
Tracking and Stealth
A born predator, Vulpes has over two decades of experience in hunting and evading the authorities.
Combat
His bite is definitely worse than his bark (though a fox's voice can be bloody frightening too), and he has taught himself a brutal form of combat suited to his anthro form.
Terror
Just as important as his other skills, and as well-developed, is his ability to leverage people's fears against them.
Abilities & Powers • Fox Spirit
Vulpes' body channels a powerful energy that connects him to foxes. This has given him several abilities -- as well as affecting his mindset and instincts.
- Shapeshifter
In theory, Vulpes is a human who can channel his energy to transform himself into a fox or any combination of the two. In practice, he has not resumed human form since his home was destroyed, and it would be difficult for him now even if he wished to (and he would never do so willingly). So his "normal" form is a humanoid foxmorph. He can also assume a qaudrupedal form roughly the same size as his anthro form, but otherwise identical to a fox, or the form of a normal fox. He has also learned that he can take the form of a fox-centaur, but has only done so once (i.e., his foxmorph torso situated on the forequarters of a super-sized fox body).
If ever his power should be suppressed, his human form would stand about 6' and have extremely pale skin. His eyes are blue.
- Superhuman Attributes
Depending on his form, Vulpes has various levels of superhuman attributes -- strength, agility, speed, endurance and senses.
~ Foxmorph: In his normal form Vulpes has low superstrength, being able to lift around 1000 pounds. His agility and reflexes are, however, far beyond human, and he is easily able to react, dodge or deflect the fastest-moving objects. His furry hide is tougher than human skin, able to deflect ordinary blows and things like knives. His running speed is around 60mph, though he can sprint roughly twice that. His claws and teeth are very hard, able to damage steel. Finally, he has extremely acute senses of scent and hearing, and can see well with only the smallest amount of light.
~ Foxmorph Quad: Most attributes are the same, but he can run significantly faster on all fours, between 90-100mph.
~ Foxtaur: As above, except that it combines the speed of four feet with further enhancement to strength, enabling him to lift about a ton. Also he can carry people on his back. (However he is not practised with this form, so he would be a bit clumsy.)
~ Fox: As a normal fox, except he can talk.
~ Human: For reference -- peak human agility and senses, all else is normal for an athletic adult male.
- Alopecotelepathy
Could also be called Vulpine Empathy; Vulpes has a connection to several genera of canids that are commonly called foxes. It's strongest with Vulpes, but also extends to Urocyon, Otocyon, Cerdocyon and Pseudalopex. That is, "true" foxes, gray foxes, bat-eared foxes, crab-eating foxes, and South American "false" foxes. This connection allows him to sense them, communicate with them, even -- when he is completely focused -- meld his mind with theirs, allowing him to experience what they experience, although he cannot control them. He can however request help, and since he is automatically dominant, they tend to give it as long as it does not mean sharing food.
- Foxfire
It looks like fire, and burns like fire, but it is actually his raw vulpine energy channeled into an attack. (It could technically be used for lighting, but Vulpes lacks the control to keep it stable long without throwing it at something. Also he relies on anger as a catalyst for it.) It is functionally a type of magic or spirit energy and can be countered appropriately, but mundane defenses are of little use.
- Healing
Vulpes has no especially enhanced healing process, but given time and peace he can focus his energy to regenerate any injury he has sustained, or purge the rare illness or poison.
- Infusion
He can also channel his energy into another being (animal, human etc.). In order to do so, they would have to be touching, and ideally have eye contact. He could thus heal injuries, although the recipient would also be transformed by the infusion. The longer it lasts, the more vulpine features will accrue. Once he stops channeling energy the changes will fade. However, he could permanently transform someone, if they are willing: this would take at least an hour. The result (for a humanoid) would be a foxmorph, similar to him but slightly weaker and without his other powers. He has never had cause to try this power, although he does guess at it.
- Longevity
The energy surging through him will extend his life far beyond that of a normal human.
Weaknesses • It's Me
Vulpes is very obviously not human. And, while his victims rarely survive encounters with him it takes little intelligence to connect a giant fox, or foxman, with reports of people being mauled.
- Design Flaws
Each of Vulpes' forms has certain limitations. His nose and ears are simply far more acute than a human's, leaving him susceptible to certain odours and loud or high-pitched sounds. His foxtaur form -- arguably his most powerful -- is also his largest and is not built to handle a world of bipeds. Finally, as a normal fox he has the weaknesses of a fox; including his vision -- foxes are short-sighted, colour-blind, and have difficulty focusing on stationary objects.
- The Smell...
Foxes have a powerful odour, and Vulpes, having larger scent glands has a proportionately stronger smell. Unless it's very well-ventilated, the smell will quickly fill any enclosed space he stays in, alerting those within to his presence.
- Music Box
Vulpes has a passion for instrumental music, and has very little chance to indulge it. Playing the right melody (gentle, mysterious music is best) can divert him from the hunt.
- Gotta Conserve Power
Active use of his power -- whether it is for shifting, foxfire, or healing -- drains his body, leaving him both hungry and tired. This puts a limit on how much he can use without needing to eat and rest (or collapse from exhaustion).
- Theobromine Poisoning
Lastly, Vulpes is susceptible to chocolate. It's nowhere near as bad as for a real fox, but he can only eat it in small quantities and if he has any chocolate in his system he cannot assume the form of a normal fox or he will become seriously ill. It also makes shapeshifting of any kind painful and slow.

Overall Personality • Vulpes has dedicated his life to one goal: the eradication of the race that has persecuted him. Seething with hatred and anger, he has only one good thing to say about mankind: how sweet they taste. He hunts them with disdainful cruelty, having come to relish their fear. His wrath extends also to those enhanced who serve humans, showing little mercy, for he believes it would be better to die than submit to such weak, hateful beings. But while brave he is not reckless, using cunning to weaken an opponent and withdrawing when needed to rest and heal, before stalking his prey afresh.
Although a solitary hunter, Vulpes has had too much of loneliness. He seeks desperately for other enhanced, for friends and allies against humanity. However, he is not one to open up to a stranger. He is quick to speak against humans, and to encourage enhanced to be proud of themselves, but otherwise he is fairly reticent. Nonetheless his manner is, perhaps surprisingly, suave and polished, for any fox's greatest weapon is his charm.
He does not trust easily, nor does he give his respect save to those who have shown they care for his own well-being. For his part, he will go out of his way to aid free enhanced, and will hold true to promises made to them.
Now, few rules are without exceptions, and Vulpes might even be willing to give a human a chance, should said human both renounce bigotry and show proper remorse and humility. For Vulpes believes that mankind owes the enhanced such a debt that it can only be repaid by servitude.
Also, despite himself, he actually has a deep fascination for the works of man. While he much prefers wild and rural life to the stink-choked cities, he does love exploring new things, and the places where humans live and work are an enticing, forbidden world. He is especially fond of computers and those intriguing little hand-held devices that he collects, which afford him a rare window on that world. But mostly, he uses them for music. Music -- soothing, beautiful, wistful -- touches him like nothing else, and he can curl up for hours, lost in a melody.

HISTORY
Family •
- Alistair MacGregor Grimm; father; murdered
- Linda Rothschild Grimm, née Friedmann; mother; murdered
- Michael Spes Grimm; little brother; murdered
Overall History • In the beginning, Vulpes' parents lived in a small town in Kentucky. Their parents had been wealthy, respected; Alistair Grimm's grandfather had even been an Army officer. But increasing hatred of enhanced had ruined their fortunes. And, as Linda's time approached and sentiment against them grew worse, they decided to leave and flee into the Appalachian wilderness. They had heard rumours of an enhanced enclave, and fortunately managed to find it.
Linda safely delivered her child, and it was soon clear they had made a good choice, as foxlike features would randomly appear and fade on the child's body. Still, the Grimms believed that the world could be changed. As the child was born soon after all enhanced were condemned to death, his parents named him "Nathaniel Lux", for they hoped that he would be a light in a dark world. He was the embodiment of their hope for better days.
Nathaniel spent the first ten years of his life in that village. He played with the other enhanced children, and learned everything his parents could teach. They tried to instill a love of country in him, but he could not help but catch the fear and anger that breathed through all the adults.
A few months before his tenth birthday, his mother gave birth to another son. She herself had animal empathy, and it seemed her children would all evolve along that line: Michael Spes also had foxlike traits, although rather than the red fox Linda sensed that his traits were those of a gray fox.
It had been believed that the enhanced would have strength in numbers. However, this likely led to their undoing. Such a relatively large collection of enhanced made it easier for the government to track them. Some ten days after Nathaniel's birthday, the village was found. Nearly everyone was killed trying to resist, although one or two children were captured.
Now, the Grimms had their house on the edge of the settlement. This seemed to promise the possibility of escape. However, the raid happened too fast. First Alistair was killed while wrestling with a FADE agent; then Linda was shot down, Michael in her arms, as she ran up the slope behind their house. Only Nathaniel made it to the safety of the treeline, looking back to see the head of his baby brother crushed beneath the boot of an overzealous agent.
At first he panicked, but then it all clicked into place. Instincts flowed into his mind, turning his fear into something useful. In the end it was not too hard to elude the pursuing agents. They had never hunted a fox before and just did not know what to do. Nathaniel was left alone in the woods, to cope with his grief and the new aspect of his personality that had been unlocked.
Those instincts were what enabled him to survive, out there in the wilderness. Shedding his human form, he effectively became a fox in everything but his mind. His powers grew apace with his woodcraft; and, in between learning how to survive as a beast of the forest, he kept himself going with fantasies of how he would take his revenge. He stopped thinking of himself as "Nathaniel", instead adopting the scientific name of the species he resembled. Vulpes.
Meanwhile he was working his way north. Despite his ferocious hatred of human beings he was too wary to approach them, evading such individuals as he chanced upon. However, starting about his thirteenth year he came upon more settled areas -- farms, timber plantations and the like. Drawn by his hatred, curiosity and an unadmitted loneliness, he began lurking around them, spying, sabotaging and stealing what he could. Over the next few years he became ever bolder.
Rumours circulated, and eventually he was caught. If it could be called that. A farmer spotted him engaged in a poultry raid, and shot him in the shoulder. The now teenaged foxboy managed to escape, but the farmer pursued. And that was a lethal mistake. Vulpes turned the tables on him, ambushing and killing him. Still ravenous, having been forced to abandoned his plunder and no longer knowing why he shouldn't, Vulpes ate him.
That experience broke his fear of humans. Although still wary of the government, he became far more aggressive. Populations began to fall in the rural areas of the northeast, as those that escaped his jaws moved away. Of course such bloodshed did not go unnoticed. Despite his caution, FADE agents did find him, more than once. But, while the fights were vicious, Vulpes always prevailed over their "pet" enhanced, killing both the traitors (as he saw them) and their human handlers.
Time passed. Vulpes became more and more adept at what he did, both stalking and fighting. Entire villages were wiped out, and he even entered cities, blending in with urban fox populations until he struck. His killings were semi-random, although he did go out of his way occasionally to target authority figures. He also encountered small communities of enhanced, but there was mutual hostility -- they feared his aggression would only make things worse, and he despised their cowardice.
Almost two years ago he had his most recent encounter with FADE. In this instance, he managed to tackle the handler first, killing him with a quick throat bite. It was in his mind that perhaps he could free the tracker. But no, that proved to be impossible, for to his horror the tracker was bound to die as well should his handler perish. And this tracker was one whom Vulpes knew; it was one of the children that had been taken from their village. His former friend died in Vulpes' arms, leaving the foxy enhanced with a renewed sense of loss.
Heartsick, he kept a lower profile for a while, not relishing the thought of meeting another acquaintance that way. But then, more recently, he picked up strange news of people, apparently from another world, who had appeared and were trying to promote enhanced. He was intrigued, and so he began working towards New York City, where many of the incidents seemed to occur, in the hopes of finding some allies, or at least sating his curiosity.
