A sweet smell permeated the underground tunnel. Kamala was frowning as she held a large pan over a fire. She wasn't very proud of her idea. It felt unpractical and risky. Underground smoke circulates poorly. People could find me. Sighing, the teenager looked down at her food supplies. But dammit, I deserve some pancakes. Ms Marvel had struck earlier today, saving a gay couple from a nasty encounter. She had revealed her powers, again. That had been cause for even more hate. Something Kamala still had to get used to. "But there is nothing a pair of syrup-infused pancakes can't fix!" She told herself in a cheery voice. This new world with its new rules was weighting her down. But Ms Marvel was not known to go down without a fight.
The first pancake sizzled. With a deft wrist-flick, Kamala flipped it around. Unfortunately, she didn't have anything to rest the pan on while the fire was heating it up. So gripping it with an oversized hand was the best way she had found to not tire. It'll all be worth it at the end. The teenager noticed getting hungrier of late. Is it because I used my powers? Action meant more energy was expended. However logical, Kamala didn't like the conclusion. She gave the food supplies between her legs a quick glance before returning her attentions on the browning pancake. Almost ready.
Kamala began wetting her lips in anticipation of the tasty treat. The movement stopped mid-way however. Alert, Kamala's head turned towards the entrance of her little section of the underground. Her left hand, free, began swelling into a giant fist. "Show yourself."

It smelled good.Things that actually smelled somewhat appetizing down here were few and far between. This was the sort of place that smelled like farts, something Molly had no trouble complaining about to anyone that would listen, and it seemed like even the pipes would fart at you. The child paused in her adventure, following what she'd decided had to be an alligator down the sewer, and veered instead towards the smell of food.It didn't take her long to find it. Molly could be quite determined when she wanted to, and the smell was drawing her like a rat to garbage. She turned a tunnel and hesitated, seeing the flicker of the fire ahead, but once she saw it was a cooking fire a bounce entered her step. It was just like camping! But underground, so cooler, and the girl didn't look any older than her friends. Molly bounced forward with a splash. She didn't expect Kamala to react so defensively to her presense, though. The little girl froze, her hazel eyes widening, as the older girl cooking whatever on the fire turned towards her. Molly wasn't afraid of getting caught, she hadn't exactly been sneaking, but she wasn't sure what to do about the way the girl's hand was blowing up like a balloon. Was that an allergic reaction? Would she be mad if Molly said it was cool? Most importantly, would she be less inclined to share if Molly accidentally insulted her?"Hi!" the girl squeaked, still looking a little startled, but she'd never been shy and so had no problem moving closer into the firelight. One of the perks of being a child underground was that Molly rarely had to duck, and could fit basically anywhere. Plus, this place was just cool even if it was kind of icky and gross sometimes. "I'm Molly!" she introduced herself brightly. "Your big hands are cool. Are you making pancakes? Can I have some?"TAG: Kamala Khan

Kamala's jaw dropped. A little girl! The teenager felt her cheeks redden as she deflated her hand. She had threatened a person younger than her. "I.. I'm sorry if I scared you. Kamala." She responded impulsively. "That's my name. And nobody has ever called my hands cool before." That's when the smell of burnt finally registered. Panicked eyes looked down at her other hand. The black haired teen quickly lifted the pan back away from the fire. Then, holding it up for closer inspection, she announced: "Food is always to be shared!" Truth be told, she didn't have much. But family traditions made it an adamant rule. "Let me just eat the first one. I wouldn't want you to get cancer because of me."
Still a bit embarrassed, the older girl shuffled to the side where more of her possessions lay on the ground. Carefully, she slid the dark-brown calorie bomb onto a paper plate. As she did that, Kamala speculated about the child. "Are you lost? Or are you hiding?" Grabbing a second plate, she then moved back to the fire. "It's a weird place for you and me to be in. Kinda like an adventure." The kid's mood lifted her own. "What shape should your pancake be?" Kamala smiled as she poured some pancake mix onto the pan. "I can make stars, moons and lightning bolts. I'm pretty partial to the last one, but I also do a mean death star."

Molly watched as the burnt pancake was transferred to a paper plate and moved closer to both Kamala and the fire. Her eyes lit up at the suggestion that the pancakes could come in fun shapes and the little girl was quick to exclaim. "A star! Like Dazzler's?" she asked, revealing that she was from a universe where the singer existed. "Oo! Or could you make one shaped like Doop?"The child peered over Kamala's shoulder, her eyes alight, as she watched the making of pancakes. "This would be a better adventure if it didn't smell like farts," Molly decided making a silly face by scrunching up her nose. She'd lived underground before, with her friends, but that decaying mansion in a sink hole had been a lot cooler than what was underneath this city. Plus, her friends had been there. "The adults say that there are mean people and I should stay down here. Is that why you're down here too?" she asked. Molly still didn't understand why bad things happened to people like her up there, but it had been impressed on her enough that she'd learned. If she ever went back up to the city she knew she couldn't use her powers. Bad things, things the grownups down here talk about in instantly hushed voices when they noticed her, happened to Mutants up there. New York was such a funny place.TAG: Kamala Khan

"Yes, like Dazzl..." Kamala's voice trailed off as she realized the little girl had mentioned Dazzler and Doop. She jumped up in surprise, excited hands almost letting go of the pan. "Wait. do you know who this is?" It was the ultimate test. The teen's legs lengthened. Hair turned blond. And Carol Denver was now towering over the young girl. The pieces of the puzzle kept coming in as Molly explained other underground dwellers had warned her about the world above. "You aren't from here, right? I mean, not that you are not from New York. I mean from this world." Like me. Trembling with excitement, the young inhuman wasn't able to keep her shapeshifting in place. Brown-haired Kamala reappeared.
Inside her pan, the first successful treat of the evening had taken shape. It was the shape of a Star, if a star was curvy and kinda looked like Doop. "This is the first time I've been able to talk to another person from my dimension." The words started to flow out of Kamala's mouth in very quick succession. She was excited. "I mean, I had heard rumors about certain heroes floating around. Some of them looked like from our world. Others I had never heard of before." Eyes drifting away from the pan again to meet the young child. "I mean, do you know of any batman? If you ask me, it sounds like a rip-off of good ol' Spidey. Probably hangs from ceilings too."
Looking back at her "piece of art", Kamala said apologetically, "Eh, doesn't look like much. But do you want it anyway?" She held the pan ready if Molly volunteered. The paper plates lay a few feet further. There was a little more pancake mix as well. They maybe had two more pancakes to go. "I'm sorry it won't be a feast."

Molly hadn't been expecting the sudden transformation. The little girl's eyes widened as Kamala's form shifted in front of her into something much more familiar. "Ms Marvel!" she squealed, looking up at one of her heroes with stars practically dancing in her eyes. That could have also been the firelight. "Are you Ms Marvel? I thought she was an adult." She didn't quite understand that they were on an alternate world. Molly had simply assumed New York was always like this. She'd never been there before, despite all she'd read about it. Dimensions and other worlds weren't exactly something they taught in elementary school, but she could name all fifty states in alphabetical order! "I'm from Earth!" Molly protested, misunderstanding what the teenager in front of her meant. "My friend Karolina's an alien, but I'm not. I'm a mutant! I can't float, but I can pick up a dinosaur!" When the pancake was offered to her Molly nodded enthusiastically and bounced over to the stack of paper plates. She peeled one off, taking a few extra moment to make sure she only got one, before heading back to Kamala and displaying the plate for her to put the pancake on. It was an over-dramatic move, like she was accepting some great gift."Any food is good!" Molly decreed before contradicting herself. "Wait, these aren't healthy pancakes, are they? Mommy and Daddy make gross healthy pancakes with bits of stuff in them. They're doctors. It's better than bran flakes," the little girl scrunched up her nose at the memory, "but I couldn't even put any whipped cream on them!"She paused in her scrutiny of the pancake. "Hey, do you think Batman was bitten by a radioactive bat?" TAG: Kamala Khan

Kamala's face beamed as Molly recognized her idol. She's got the sparkles in her eyes. The mark of a true fan. After a brief cough, the shapeshifter turned back into her original form. "Na. I'm six-teen. I just... borrow her appearance from time to time." Her eyes shifted to look into the fire. "You know, to fight crime and stuff." Kamala returned her attention on Molly as the little girl explained things. "Hold on. Your friend is an alien?" She kinda ha already guessed the little girl was a mutant. But besides that, it was enough material to fill two fanfics. "You can't float? I can't either. Haven't tried picking up a dinosaur yet. Where did you get one?"
The way Molly grabbed her plate and presented it to Kamala was adorable. Joining in on the fun, Kamala slid the prized possession onto it before bowing with a "And here you go, my queen." Molly then made a royal decree healthy pancakes, essentially declaring war to them. "Don't worry. I couldn't afford more than the quick mix. And I have powder sugar to go with it." She pointed at the container right next to the plates. There was also a half-empty jar of chocolate-peanut butter. "Help yourself!" Pouring in some more mix, Kamala made her another attempt at a pancake. This one was going to look like a smiley.
"Yeah, that would make sense. So he's kind of like a mutant vampire!" Kamala chuckled. "Be careful not to get bitten. He might replace your powers with his own mutation." The teen flipped the pan. The sweet treat landed with a satisfying thud. "The next pancake is almost ready."

Whooaaaaaa. She was talking to a real live teen superhero!
The little girl in the colorful hat could barely contain her excitement. She gasped, her entire face lighting up, and she stared up at Kamala in awe. Ms Marvel was a real superhero. She had a real costume! She had her own theme song! She could do everything Molly and her friends had tried to do and failed. The admiration lasted perhaps a few seconds before she was distracted by the silliness of the pancakes.
Molly giggled, barely able to hold a straight face, as she stuck her nose in the air and haughtily drawled, "We find your offering is acceptable, darling," in the same voice those weird old ladies with their fake hair, and fake boobs, and little dogs in purses did. The royal we, of course, just had to be said. She lost her air of false regality the moment that powered sugar was suggested. "Ooo!" she almost dropped her pancake and plate but fumbled to catch it again as she bounced over in search of more sugar she probably didn't need.As Molly smeared some chocolate peanut butter across her pancake and topped it off with a mushroom-cloud-sized puff of refined sugar she considered mutant vampires. "What if it was a radioactive fruit bat?" Molly suggested. "I guess he could be like Bunnicula." She imagined a chibi man-bat in her mind sucking the juice out of a giant strawberry. It was the stuff of childhood daydreams. Batnicula, and his giant fruit, vanished at the mention of more real food.Queen Molly bounded back over offering up her sugar-covered plate again with a toothy grin and a powder-dusted nose. "Thank you," Molly said, using the manners her parents had taught her, with her bright eyes shining sincerity. She accepted the second pancake and went off to sugar bomb it. When she'd finished the little girl settled cross-legged by Kamala's little fire as she picked up one of her pancakes and took a big bite."My friends and I tried to be real superheroes like you," Molly explained when she'd mostly finished chewing. "But nobody else made a costume, or used our cool code names," she complained with a power-sugar-covered pout. "Except Old Lace. She doesn't have a real name. She's a dinosaur. That's how I know I can pick one up! She's Gert's pet dinosaur. She can fit into my hats! ...sort of." TAG: Kamala Khan

"What's your superhero alias, Molly?" Kamala was starting to get to know the little mutant. She looked at her hat. "Something related to cats?" The teen looked at her friends' clothes. Unsurprisingly, they were quite dirty. Not that mine are any cleaner. But I can shapeshift into something more presentable if I feel like it. Molly's mock haughtiness distracted Kamala for a moment. Giggling, she delivered the pancake onto the paper plate.
The little girl went to work on the pancake. Kamala nodded enthusiastically as the butter was spread across her blob-shaped pancake. She winced a little though at the sheer quantity of sugar. "Hey Molly." This was actually the first time Kamala had the occasion to speak to someone else in similar shoes to her. "Since you've gotten your powers... have you noticed eating more?" She wanted to make sure it wasn't just her. It kinda made sense. Higher energy consumption, all that. But Google had all kinds of wacko theories about mutants. And I don't even know if I am one.
The discussion on Batman distracted Kamala further. "Maybe he is harmless. Hopefully we don't meet him face to face anyway." The topic moved back to codenames and clothes. Kamala also noted the dinosaur. "Tell you what. I know you're not supposed to go above ground. But I know a couple of somewhat safe places. Maybe we can go to a laundry-mat and work on our costumes?" The good thing about Kamala was that she believed every word Molly was telling her. As a superhero nerd, what the mutant girl made sense. At least, just as much as what was happening to herself since breaking out of her cocoon."How can a dinosaur fit into your hats? Do you have any others?"
But before Molly could answer, a loud screeching noise echoed through the tunnels. Kamala dropped the pan, covering her ears from the painful sound. "What?" Looking to her left, she saw three big shadows lurking.

"No!" Molly said with a little giggle when Kamala suggested that her superhero name might have something to do with cats. It barely occurred to her that it might be because of the hat on her head. "I'm PRINCESS POWERFUL!" the child announced, setting down her plate to put two powered sugar covered fists against her sides. She jutted out her chin in an attempt to look more heroic but it kinda looked like she had a sugar-beard.
She then heroically shoved most of an entire pancake into her mouth. "Mm merways mungry," Molly said with her mouth full, loosely translated to her always being hungry. It was impossible to know if it was the powers, though, or puberty. Both started around the same time. Not that Molly had quite hit that stage of physical development yet.
Molly swallowed down her pancake so she could respond much more clearly to the idea of washing clothes. "Is laundry-mat code for the place superheroes get their costumes in New York?" the child asked. Coming from a fairly wealthy family, that also babied her to no end, Molly had never actually done laundry before. She also had never been to a laundromat. Then, it dawned on her what Kamala was really saying."You'll let me fight crime with you!?" the little girl asked, grinning up at Kamala with eyes shining through all the dirt and powdered sugar. "This is the best EVER!" she wriggled in her spot on the ground, somewhere between an excited victory dance and childish flailing, as the older girl asked her about hats and dinosaurs. Molly opened her mouth to respond but was interrupted by the loud screech."AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" Molly screeched in reply, her powdery hands reaching up to clamp over her ears. She didn't know what had made the sound, and shook her head as Kamala posed the question, that was when she saw the looming trio of shadows. Molly's bright eyes widened in terror and she scrambled towards the older girl seeking comfort. "Are those monsters?" she whispered.TAG: Kamala Khan

"OOh!" Kamala exclaimed. "It's a good superhero name." Princess Powerful's pose was more cute than heroic. Kamala tried her best to suppress her giggles, which transformed into a big grin. "You kinda look like Santa right now, with all that white covering your chin." Molly's next sentence was harder to understand. Scratching the back of her head, Kamala repeated, "Mermaid Mungry?" The last pancake was almost ready.
The laundry-mat comment made the teen pause. She completely froze as the little girl suggested joining her in crime-fighting. "Er..." Kamala started, sweating uncomfortably. But she saw her friend's reaction. How to explain that she barely had the confidence to go alone, yet alone look after a sidekick? In front of so much enthusiasm, it was hard to explain.
The whole conversation between the two girls was interrupted by their screeching intruders. Kamala narrowed her eyes. One by one, three humongous rats stepped out of the shadows. They circled the camp fire, inching closer with every paw step. "Molly, stay behind me." Kamala ordered the little girl as she moved closer. Turning her fists into oversized clubs, the hero took a bold step towards the two rats facing her. Recognizing a challenger, the monsters began chattering aggressively, baring very sharp teeth. "Nope. You're not getting our pancakes. Royal decree from Princess P." Fists clenched tighter while Kamala grew their density even further.

Rats were so not supposed to be that big! Molly stayed behind Kamala like instructed, her eyes wide as saucers, as she took in the monster sized rats. They were big, they were scary, and they were ugly in a way she'd never encountered before. The little mutant had never seen a wild rat, let alone one bigger than her, and she was surprised by how different they were from the pet one her class had in third grade. Flower, their pet rat, had been fat instead of intimidating. These things would probably have eaten rats like her for breakfast!Kamala had made her hands big again, an ability that Molly was just now starting to understand the usefulness of, and challenged the rats over their pancakes. It might have been easier just to give up the food and run away, but Molly wanted to eat her pancakes! These big rat meanies couldn't have them! Emboldened by the use of her codename, someone had actually used it!, the little girl activated her mutant abilities. Her eyes lit up, emanating a fuchsia light, and that same light flickered from the ends of her hair that were writhing like live wires. While two of the rats engaged Kamala the third had slunk around to attack from behind. Unfortunately for that rat Molly happened to be quite the little pancake protector. She didn't notice it at first, too busy being frightened of the rats in front of Kamala, until she heard a hissing noise behind her. Like a loose pipe. She turned, her glowing eyes widening, and rounded on her opponent. The rat wasn't deterred by her glowing, and this smaller human between it and the food wasn't as intimidating. It shot forward, opportunistically, only to get punched."MY PANCAKE!" Molly hollered as the rodent of unusual size went flying. The thing smashed into a far wall with a squeak, kind of like a rabid dog toy, and hit the ground with a thud.TAG: Kamala Khan

Kamala focused on the two giant rodents. She took a step towards one, raising her fists. Eyes glinting, it just jumped back. It's sibling used the occasion to try and sneak past the teen. "Oh, no you don't!" A gigantic left fist crashed into the ground right where the beast was. Unfortunately, the rat was able to jump back. Now it was the turn of the first monster to approach. This time, Kamala extended her right fist arm. The ball of flesh shot in the direction of the rat like a canon ball. t didn't have time to evade. Ms Marvel felt the satisfaction of connecting with the evil beast. There was a sharp moment of pain however as a big pair of teeth sunk into her thumb. The whole thing finished with a loud splattering sound. When Kamala shrank her right arm again, she was first shaking it out of pain. Then, looking up, the hero saw her opponent's head, flattened against the wall. She almost threw up.
Behind her, Molly yelled. Reinvigorated by the warcry, Kamala focused on the second rodent. It seemed uncertain, but also angry. Crazy chattering ensued. Again, Ms Marvel raised her fists. The rat, suddenly panicking, launched another horrible screeching. Kamala covered her ears with giant hands in response. Cut...It...Out! Unable to move her arms, the young hero instead launched a kick. Her leg shot forward, hitting the rat in it's big, fat belly. It rolled in the dirt a couple of yards. Withe the screeching gone, Kamala was able to uncover her ears. She now looked around, "Molly, are you ok?" There was a third rat. But like the second one, it seemed stunned. It just lay on the ground, slowly scrambling up. "As if it had fallen from a flight of stairs." Its arms were moving funny. It too, was chattering angrily. Just with more twitches.

The little girl, thankfully, had missed the rat-monster getting it's head smashed in. She was focused more on her opponent. The monster still lying against the ground ahead wasn't moving, but Molly stayed with her stance squared and her two tiny fists raised in anticipation. Her eyes were still glowing.
Molly turned at the sound of her name. She looked up at Kamala, her fuchsia eyes wide, "I'm okay!" her response was a chirp, but then her gaze turned back to the rat she'd hit. It was trying to get up, but something was wrong with it. "I think I broke it," she admitted, sounding a little guilty. "Why aren't they leaving?" the little girl asked in a whine. Her teeth grazed her lower lip, nibbling it in contrition, because even if the rats were scary she didn't really want to hurt them. They still felt pain.
That thought had her eyes widening in horror. Did being a giant rat count as a superpower? Her friends had been very clear she wasn't allowed to use her powers on anybody that didn't have powers too. Otherwise that was mean and she'd be a bad mutant. Molly didn't want to be a bad mutant. TAG: Kamala Khan

"They are probably desperate." Kamala responded. I doubt the government treats them any better than their human equivalent. Ms Marvel's hand grew in size again. Rat number two was still recovering from her kick Molly's rodent limped around. The little girl seemed upset. "It's time to finish this." Kamala's giant fist raised into the air. But as the rat limped forward, she began to tremble. It just wants the pancake. The whole monster thing seemed ridiculous to her now. If anything, the broken thing seemed pathetic.
Sighing, Kamala lowered her arm. "You know what: I've lost my appetite." The hand, size back to normal, now came down to cover the heroine's face. "Molly. I don't think they'll leave. Take my hand." With a quick swoop of her left arm, Kamala picked up her backpack. She left behind the remaining pancakes, the peanut butter jar, sugar and fire pit. Maybe they'll enjoy the warmth. Looking back at the other rat, Kamala caught of glimpse of her previous extermination. A nauseous feeling rose inside her chest. "Let's go."She tried to grab Molly's hand, making sure she didn't see the dead rodent.
"Do you feel like sleeping under the stars tonight? I know a bridge that's pretty safe." Kamala needed some fresh air. And it probably wouldn't hurt Molly either. "And then first thing in the morning we'll go to the laundromat to make our superhero costumes." Readjusting her backpack, Kamala gave the little girl her best attempt at a smile.
