Are you ready for a scare?
If it weren't for the people in demon masks running around outside the line they were standing in could have been one trying to get into the new Apple store in SoHo. The building that they were lined up outside looked as ordinary as any others. Even the sign that exclaimed it was a House of Horrors didn't seem too out of place in New York City. Mikey grinned as a man in a skeleton mask terrorized a family ahead of them in line and turned to look at Phoenix.
"Okay, so," he started, throwing on his best reassuring grin. "Everything in there is fake. Okay? And innocent people in masks don't want to be set on fire any more than regular innocent people, yeah?" Mikey coached his partner with a mildly worried look, keeping his voice low so as not to startle the other people in line. He'd been on like this ever since he'd decided it would be super fun to go to the haunted house and had invited her. The Handler hadn't actually expected her to say yes, but was delighted when she did...until he remembered the plants.
Following their encounter with a monster named Bloom, that they almost hadn't escaped from alive, neither of them had particularly warm and fuzzy feelings towards plants. Michael hadn't complained, at first, when all the plants in their apartment had suddenly gone missing and he found their charred pots when he took out the trash. The problem was when all the public potted plants had suffered a similar fate and Mikey tried to cover by concocting this crazy story about how the houseplants were coming alive and he was convinced one of the trackers was subconsciously controlling them. Not his, obviously, because fire =/= plants.
Obviously, it would not be a good thing for either of their careers if she started setting people on fire. He'd probably be figuratively fired...if he wasn't caught in her literal fire, and she'd probably be labeled too dangerous and eliminated. Which was worse than being figuratively fired. So, for her own safety, he hoped they didn't have any spooky plant exhibits.
"This is gunna be fun!" he decided loudly, bobbing cheerfully in his place in line. Better than the party at the precinct, he was sure. Michael was even wearing his costume, the bright yellow and black stripes and poorly applied bald cap marking his as Charlie Brown. He'd tried to convince Phoenix to dress up with him, too.
